Managing Chromebook Display Settings

Once you’ve signed in, you’ll be able to adjust the display settings on your Chromebook. Click the status area at the bottom-right corner of the screen and click on the settings “gear”.

Type “display” in the search bar at the top, and click on “Displays”.

This is what the default display settings look like, if no other displays are connected to the Chromebook. Here, you can change resolution or orientation (rotation).

This is what the display settings look like, if another display is connected to the Chromebook. The default display mode is extended display, indicated by “Mirroring” set to off. In mirrored mode, you have a single desktop and it’s shown on both displays. In extended mode, the secondary display simply gives you more desktop room separate from the primary display. You can choose either mirrored or extended mode for your displays by turning mirroring off or on.

Pictured below are the display settings if mirroring is turned on. Note the indicator that shows briefly in the lower right-hand corner when you switch modes or connect a second display.

If, while in extended mode, your secondary display does not completely fill the display, you can adjust its resolution by highlighting that display, and using the resolution slider.

If more adjustments are necessary, you can click on “Overscan” at the bottom of the screen, which brings up the adjustments below. The overscan feature allows you to adjust the exact position of the picture on the external display. This might be necessary to prevent the image from being cut off or a black frame appearing around the picture. You would use the arrow keys along with the Shift key to adjust the image until it looks correct on the display.
